So there it is, there it was. One of my favourite bands of all time, Alexisonfire, have called it a day. Shut up shop. I can't say I didn't see this coming - Dallas Green has been putting a lot of his time and energy into his new folk band 'City and Colour', and when he left the band I think we all knew they couldn't replace him, his voice entwined perfectly with those harsh screams and heavy riffs like sweet, melting golden syrup. (Loads of people seem to be loving City and Colour, so I guess it's a good chance for everyone to hear Dallas' beautiful voice that otherwise wouldn't have.)
They proved pretty early on in their career that they were a heavy band (not for the faint hearted) and if you were lucky enough to see them live, yours ears would be ringing for days after - it was pretty fucking brutal. BUT they did show later on that they're capable of a lot more than just thrashing around on stage. They wrote some beautiful lyrics, their riffs were tight, the drumming was monumental and the stage acrobatics were getting more impressive and circus like each day. They changed it up, developed new sounds so when you listen to them you can literally hear the progression - like a musical timeline. It feels like yesterday when I first discovered these 5 boys from Ontario, and boy was I in love - they were like an Canadian 'Funeral for a friend' so as you can imagine I was hooked straight away.
Granted, they're not everyone's cup of tea, but they were mine. They were my PG tips with a splash of milk (and a couple of digestives on the side.) Of course, I'm gutted that they've split up but the beautiful thing about music is that it lasts forever - It's not as if I won't listen to their first album in my car, when I'm running, walking my dog, or cleaning my room.
Realize even disbelief requires a leap of faith
